Abstract

Czechia, due to its location in Central Europe and long geomorphological development, has seen the development of a varied relief and the creation of different types of geomorphological landscapes. The concept of geodiversity and geomorphosites is increasingly used for their evaluation, but so far less attention has been paid to the Czech–Austrian border area, where the valuable relief of the Novohradské Mountains is located.

The main goal of this contribution is therefore the presentation of selected rare geomorphosites in the southern part of the Novohradské Mountains — Mt. Kamenec, Mt. Myslivna and Mt. Jelení — and their evaluation. Detailed geomorphological mapping and inventory provided the basis for selecting and evaluating each locality using the standard Czech methodology for geomorphosite assessment, allowing direct comparison with previously evaluated sites in the north-eastern part of the area.

All sites show high scientific value with respect to their conservation value, the occurrence of specific weathering forms on granites, and palaeogeographic importance; only Mt. Jelení reaches lower total values due to its remoteness and poor accessibility. The acquired knowledge can be used for geo-educational and geo-touristic activities in the study area, including guided walks organised by local geotourism organisations.
