Paper: Reawakening the Past: The Role of Gamification in Preserving Cultural Legacy — A Case Study from Czechia
Plural. History, Culture, Society, 12(2)
Abstract
This study examines the Sudetenland region of Czechia — an area marked by post-WWII depopulation following the displacement of its German-speaking population, yet still rich in cultural and natural heritage. The authors test how gamification techniques, combined with geospatial data, can revitalise abandoned villages, support regional development and engage local communities.
The research integrates STEM and HASS (Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) educational frameworks, and proposes "Rurex" as an innovative gamification process with significant potential for sustainable rural development. Findings show that game-based heritage work can revive intergenerational dialogue, attract young people to peripheral territories, and diversify the local economy through cultural-tourism initiatives.
